Feature Story

Small Businesses Are the Target, Not an Afterthought

The idea that hackers only go after big companies is outdated. 86% of all data breaches since January 2025 have involved small and mid-sized businesses, and SMBs are now targeted nearly four times as often as large organizations. Wedding businesses check every box scammers look for: high-value transactions, deposit-based payment structures, and owners juggling too many roles to run tight security.

The AI shift has made this worse, fast:

LLM-generated phishing emails now get a 54% click-through rate, compared to 12% for old-school, human-written scam emails — a 4.5x jump in effectiveness

46% of small businesses encountered AI-generated phishing in just the past 12 months

Voice phishing (fake calls, cloned voices) grew 442% in the back half of 2025 alone

Translation: the "obviously fake" email full of typos is being replaced by one that reads exactly like your client, your vendor, or your bank — because AI wrote it to.

Why This Hits Wedding Businesses Specifically

Couples are already primed to worry about this: 92% plan their wedding primarily from a smartphone, and vendor deposit fraud is consistently flagged as one of the costliest wedding scams out there, right alongside fake dress sites and venues that vanish with a deposit. That worry cuts both ways: the same trust couples extend to you when they wire a deposit is exactly what a scammer is trying to hijack, whether by impersonating you to them or impersonating them (or another vendor) to you.

And the financial exposure isn't small. 67% of breached small businesses report losses between $10,000 and $100,000, and 40% say a $100,000 incident would be enough to force them to close. For a solo photographer or a three-person planning team, that's not a rounding error.

The Uncomfortable Part: Most of Us Aren't Ready

84% of small business owners still self-manage their own cybersecurity, with no dedicated help. Only 36% have invested in any new security tools recently, and just 11% have adopted AI-aware defenses meaning the tools meant to catch this new wave of AI-written scams are the least-adopted piece of the puzzle. A full third of small businesses admit their security setup is flat-out outdated.

Three Places to Start This Month

Verify any payment or bank detail change by phone, not by replying to the email. Call the number on file, not the one in the email signature, before you or a client ever change where money goes. This single habit stops the majority of invoice-fraud schemes cold.

Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere client data lives: email, CRM, invoicing platform, cloud storage. It's a five-minute setup per tool and it's the single biggest lever against account takeover.

Say it out loud to your clients. A short line in your welcome packet: "we will never ask you to change a payment method by email alone" protects your couples and makes you look more buttoned-up than 90% of vendors who never mention it.

Security isn't the fun part of running a wedding business. But in a year when the scam emails read exactly like the real thing, it's become one of the highest-leverage places to spend twenty minutes.
